Map of Europe after the invasion of Italy on June 6th, 1944 (Citizen Soldier)
The Allied Invasion of Italy caused the loss of Hitler's most powerful ally. Mussolini was overthrown after the allies invaded Italy. After losing a total of 3,800 men during the fight for position Rapido River, the Allies lost many more. During the summer of 1944, Italian partisan attacks cost the Germans 5,000 casualties. During the final stage to achieving Rome, the Allies lost 40,000 soldiers. The Germans had only lost 20,000. Thousands more would die in the months that followed. The Allies finally captured Rome on June 4th, 1944. The capture was a morale booster, but the Normandy invasion happened two days later making the invasion of Italy not as important. The Allies had pushed a majority of German forces out of Italy but had not completely achieved their task. The German forces in Italy would have to be dealt with later while the Allies turned their focuses on France.
